Full Speed Ahead for New Eurosilo at Kyritz in Germany

At ESI, we are pressing forward to meet the deadline for delivery of the new state-of-the-art potato starch silo at the Kyritz production plant of Emsland Stärke. The 57,200 m³ Eurosilo is scheduled to be operational by autumn 2025. While civil works on the site are progressing rapidly, ESI’s Project Department Manager, Jan-Willem Hanskamp, is managing a multi-layered planning schedule to ensure efficient logistics and quality that meets specifications.

 Production Phase

Jan-Willem Hanskamp explains, “We are now overseeing the production of all the steel parts of the Eurosilo system. These larger parts, such as the central column, the bridge, and the screw conveyor, are produced in different countries, so we must engage closely with the subcontractors to ensure that everything comes together. This is why we work with local inspectors who are on-site every two weeks and report back to me, allowing me to centrally direct and monitor the process. For the final inspection, the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), we will travel to the producer. Before that, our International Welding Specialist, Mark de Graaff, regularly visits the subcontractors to inspect the welding of the steel parts.”

Planning and Logistics

To integrate the new Eurosilo alongside the two existing potato starch silos, we are carefully aligning our planning with that of all project stakeholders. The foundation and silo floor are to be completed by our civil partner in January, and the concrete silo wall is scheduled to be ready by March. Jan-Willem notes, “By April, we will deliver all components from various countries to Kyritz. Prior to that, we will also handle the TÜV certification for components in a specific zone of the silo, with regards to ATEX safety standards. The assembly of the mechanical parts will be conducted outside the silo. Starting in May, we expect the majestic big lift, when large cranes will hoist the major components over the silo wall into the silo. I’m eagerly anticipating that great moment!”

‘We’re really satisfied about the progress of the project and I’m looking forward to
the construction of the silo wall, next month in March.”

Building and Testing

From May onwards, we will begin building and testing the complete system. Simultaneously, the site will be prepared to connect to the new silo, in conjunction with the two existing silos from Weibull. In fact, Emsland Stärke’s first connection with ESI was the conversion of their Weibull silo at the Emlichheim plant site. By September to October, the complete project should be finished and integrated into the standard operations of the Kyritz production plant.
