Additional new potato starch silo for Emsland-Stärke

At Kyritz in Germany, one of the four production sites of Emsland-Stärke, a new Eurosilo will be built to significantly increase the potato starch storage capacity. A need for expansion, with little space available, and the aim for improved logistics made the Eurosilo their system of choice. With basic and detailed engineering delivered in advance, we can now go full swing ahead with the realization. The new potato starch silo is scheduled to be ready after the summer next year.

Higher capacity, improved logistics

The new potato starch silo will be built next to the two existing silos. Although it offers a large storage capacity of 57,200 m3, the small footprint of the Eurosilo makes it possible to fit it into the plant site that is literally next door to the surrounding village. With automated storage in a Eurosilo, Emsland-Stärke improves its logistic efficiency by replacing conventional storage in big bags, stored in multiple locations. Instead of trucks, forklifts and manpower, all material handling is done by the proven Eurosilo system right at the production site.

Ready for a flying start

Contrary to a typical project course, the detailed engineering was delivered before the final order. Henri de Boer, managing director ESI, explains: “The team at Emsland-Stärke was already convinced to go for the Eurosilo system at a very early stage. But it takes more than our scope at ESI to realize the complete project, such as getting the required permits or aligning with a local civil constructor. Therefore, they asked us to prepare everything to start immediately after the final order was given. So, the basic engineering was done in 2022 and we delivered the detailed engineering in 2023.

Tight schedule

At Kyritz the preparation of the building site has started. This presents us with a tight schedule to deliver the necessary embedded parts. Project manager Jan-Willem Hanskamp: “Based on the detailed engineering we have given the order for production of the components. The parts that need to be embedded in the foundation will be delivered in Oktober. The finishing of the basement by the civil partner will take place in December, followed by the silo floor in January. By February to March the silo wall should be ready. That gives us until April to get all the mechanical components on site and to start assembling and testing as of May. The overall goal is to have the silo operational by the next campaign, in the fall of 2025.”

Dependable and proven system

Although the project is run on a tight schedule, we are confident to be able to meet the project goals. This is because it is a slightly modified copy of our latest potato starch silo for producer Lyckeby in Sweden. Not surprisingly, the team of Emsland-Stärke has visited the site of Lyckeby in Nöbbelöv and consulted other potato starch producers that work with the Eurosilo system. With our long history in potato starch storage, we know that you need to be sure to entrust your perishable and valuable product into a system that will last for the coming 30 years.
